Kids make great subjects for sketches because they get so absorbed in what they are doing.  School functions are a great place to sketch: you are often sitting and listening while the children perform,  giving you both the time to draw and a captive (though rarely still) subject.

I kept busy making these sketches while I was waiting for my daughter at the district band festival practice.

Balloons

As I was sitting in a bookstore waiting for my wife, two children walked by with a big bouquet of birthday balloons.  I grabbed my ever-present sketchbook and scribbled as fast as I could.
